But I don't see why that has to be in opposition to justice or peace. I don't imagine most immigrants come here to be cut-throat competitors who will do anything to get their own way. I imagine most are just like ordinary people who want to do good for themselves and their families and have sense of community with the people they live among. I don't see that as having to ignore justice, but being about justice. I agree with Dennis on this point.Joseph Oroscohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04950358209722798820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31439825.post-84147576428291776722007-06-04T15:47:00.000-07:002007-06-04T15:47:00.000-07:00Also, I can just hear the local conservative colum...Also, I can just hear the local conservative columnist now: 'At least we're better than Iran and Iraq.'

As if that's much of an accomplishment here.

Heck, China edged us out by 36 spots.Dennishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05685035273589091992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31439825.post-13898601806511398942007-06-04T15:44:00.000-07:002007-06-04T15:44:00.000-07:00The GPI might be more accurately called the Global...The GPI might be more accurately called the Global Peace and Justice Index given the various indicators it relies on.

Uuuh....Anonymous, what makes you think people don't immigrate to other countries for the same reasons they immigrate here?

And since when is prosperity set in opposition to peace and justice? I don't believe those things inherently contradict each other, because if they do, we're in serious trouble.

As for the Economist, their point about freeloading security might make sense if not for the last 7 years of US foreign policy. Or would the Economist actually argue that the Iraq debacle has made Europe safer?Dennishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05685035273589091992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31439825.post-31660466824057284062007-06-04T03:44:00.000-07:002007-06-04T03:44:00.000-07:00Isn't American mentality different partly because ...Isn't American mentality different partly because of the type of immigrant America attracts and has always atracted---an immigrant who wants to live the American dream, work hard, get more and more money....etc. or get away from something? Don't these traits persist for generations upon generations, and form a cultural character? And still many immigrants come to this country for the same reason, to financially better themselves. We live in a country of people who want to get rich and climb to the top. Hence our peace/justice rating would be low, as not a top priority here.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
